Jets withdraw O’Donovan offer

The Newcastle Jets can confirm that the Club will not re-sign striker, Roy O’Donovan for the Hyundai A-League 2019/20 season.

Protracted negotiations broke down last week as the Club withdrew its offer for the Irishman’s services.

CEO, Lawrie McKinna expressed his disappointment at how discussions had broken down.

“We made a number of generous offers to Roy and his management,” McKinna said.

“Talks began [about re-signing] midway through the season, with serious discussions beginning about two months ago.”

McKinna said O’Donovan had agreed in principal to the Club’s most recent offer, however stumbling blocks continued to arise.

“As Ernie, Joel and myself said from the beginning we wanted to keep Roy and did everything within reason to extend his stay in Newcastle,” McKinna said.

“We were close on a number of occasions, but unfortunately from our perspective the goal posts continued to shift.

“It was disappointingas the Club has stood by and supported him through some difficult circumstances.”

During his two-year stint in the Hunter O’Donovan missed a total of 12 matches through suspensions, in addition to fixtures missed through injury.

McKinna wished the departing striker all the best with the next chapter in his career.

“Roy is a top professional and a good family man, he’ll be an asset wherever he ends up and everyone at the Club wishes him well,” McKinna added.
