ACLE MATCH REPORT: Newcastle Jets vs Shanghai Port

Shanghai Port defeated the Newcastle Jets 4-2 in the AFC Champions League Elite

Shanghai dominated possession and chances in the opening minutes of the match, with Delianov being forced into making several saves. Leonardo opened the scoring for Shanghai in the 23rd minute, nodding the ball into the back of the net from close range.

Things would be compounded in the 26th minute, with Aquilina turning the ball into his own net following a dangerous ball from Melendo.

The Jets started to show some positive signs towards the end of the half, having several near misses including Patrick Wood skewing a shot wide. Joel Bertolissio also fired one low across the 6-yard box right before half-time, but wasn’t able to find the feet of any of his teammates. Shanghai took their two goal advantage into the break.

Prince Ampen added a third for the visitors shortly after halftime, smashing the ball into the bottom corner at the far post. Patrick Wood would give us a lifeline in the 58th minute, taking Badolato’s cross in his stride before tucking the ball past Yan Junling in the Shanghai goal.

Xavier Bertoncello added a second in the 80th minute. A nice passage of play saw the Jets work the ball from the right flank to the left, where Xavier curled the ball around the keeper and into the net.

The late comeback would be shot down by Shanghai, as Xinxiang Li added a fourth, stretching to poke the ball past Delianov. Full-time would soon follow, with the visitors running out as 4-2 winners.
