The Jets have defeated Gold Coast United at Ausgrid Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The Newcastle Jets returned to winning form with a 3-2 victory over Gold Coast United at Ausgrid Stadium on Wednesday night.

After 25 minutes the Jets started to take the ascendancy; creating their first real opportunity when Jeremy Brockie made a trademark run inside the box, but failed to capitalise with his final shot on goal.

Brockie added yet another sublime goal to his account twenty minutes later as he headed home at the near post from the most unlikely of sources in defender Nikolai Topor-Stanley.

The Newcastle Jets went into the half break with a goal advantage after finding the back of the net just minutes before the break; with a goal that pleased the fans and coaching staff alike after some great build up play from Michael Bridges and Topor-Stanley creating the opportunity.

The Jets continued to push forward after the restart and almost went ahead on 50 minutes through Ryan Griffiths, but his shot was comfortably saved by Gold Coast goalkeeper Jerrad Tyson.

Ben Kennedy was forced to make a nice one-on-one save moments later to prevent Ben Halloran from equalising for Gold Coast United.

Michael Bridges almost opened his account for the season on 60 minutes with a late run and shot on goal but his effort brushed the side netting after getting a touch from Tyson.

It seemed just a matter of time before Newcastle would extend their lead, and Brockie did just that when he turned two defenders and slotted home from the six yard box to score his second goal of the match.

The Jets gave away possession in their own third with twenty minutes remaining and Gold Coast made them pay as they converted from the resulting throw in with Halloran scored scoring at the back post.

The unthinkable happened for Newcastle when Adama Traore equalised for Gold Coast United, getting them back into the contest after looking unlikely to get a result.

But the moment was short lived for the Gold Coast as Newcastle responded from the kick-off; with a long ball playing in Ryan Griffiths down the left who provided second half substitute Labinot Haliti with a pin point cross to head home.

The Jets held on to seal the win in front of their home crowd, with 9,311 fans coming out for the midweek clash in what was horrendous pre-match conditions.

A happy Jeremy Brockie said it was “a well deserved three points” for his side and added “hopefully it will boost our confidence before the game on Saturday” after a string of disappointing result.

The Jets now travel to AAMI Park to face Melbourne Victory on Saturday night.
