The Newcastle Jets were defeated 2-nil at Bluetongue Stadium on Saturday night.
The Central Coast Mariners claimed the points in the F3 derby, defeating the Newcastle Jets 2-0 at Bluetongue Stadium on Saturday night.
A goal on either side of the break from Mariners’ pair Rostyn Griffiths and Matt Simon carved out the win for the home side.
The Jets found the back of the net after just three minutes with a clean finish from Labinot Haliti, but the Jets striker was in an offside position after receiving the rebound from Jeremy Brockie-s earlier shot at goal.
Mustafa Amini started his second consecutive match for the Mariners and showed a glimpse of class on 24 minutes as he sent in a volley from 30 yards out that forced a diving save from Jets goalkeeper Matthew Nash.
It would prove to be a vital piece of play from Amini as Rostyn Griffiths emerged from the pack to head home from the resulting corner and give his side the lead.
The Mariners looked dangerous from that point on and were the most likely to score before the break, but some typically strong defending from the Newcastle Jets kept them in the contest.
Simon doubled the Mariners advantage shortly after the restart when he sent his shot into the roof of the net at the back post after Nash could only tip away Bernie Ibini-s shot at the near post.
Former Newcastle United player Daniel McBreen came on late and forced a nice one-on-one save from Nash on 89 minutes and then saw his nicely timed header hit the cross bar on 90 minutes.
Nash put in a good performance in goal for the Newcastle Jets, but couldn-t prevent a rampant Central Coast outfit from getting the goals they needed.
Nash said the result was “disappointing, we came down here looking to get the points”.
Newcastle Jets host Sydney FC next Saturday at Ausgrid Stadium for Round 11 of the Hyundai A-League.
