ACLE MATCH REPORT: Newcastle Jets vs Kyoto Sanga

The Newcastle Jets fell 5-2 against Kyoto Sanga in their third fixture of the AFC Champions League Elite

The Newcastle Jets would take the lead in the 13th minute. Zane Schreiber would attempt to cross the ball into the box, with the ball striking the arm of Shichi, with a penalty being awarded after a VAR check. Patrick Wood stepped up and comfortably dispatched his penalty in front of the jeering Kyoto fans, sending it into the top left corner. The 100-strong contingent of travelling Jets fans were thrilled.

James Delianov would make a superb save in the 31st minute, as he reacted quickly to push Rafael Elias’s header past the post. The Jets would be awarded yet another penalty in the second minute of first-half injury time, as Joe Lolley was felled in the box due to an elbow across the face from Shichi. Wood stepped up yet again, calmy placing his effort into the bottom right corner, leaving the keeper rooted to the spot.

Kyoto would pull a goal back just before the break, as Tawiah volleyed past Delianov into the bottom corner. Halftime score, 2-1 to the Jets

Ten minutes into the second half, Souza equalised for Kyoto, with Marco Tulio’s free kick deflecting off his leg and into the net, wrongfooting Delianov. Tulio was at it again just moments later, finding space just inside the box to smash the ball into the back of the net.

Rafael Elias added Kyoto’s fourth in the 67th minute, before Souza added the nail in the coffin with a fifth goal in the 84th minute.

The Jets return back home this Saturday to take on the Wellington Phoenix, in our last A-League Men’s home match of 2026. The Club would also like to provide a special mention to one of our owners, Robert Camilleri, who personally funded the trips of 29 Newcastle Jets fans and administrative staff to Kyoto for this unique AFC Champions League Elite experience.
