It was a single goal which proved the difference in an NPL Northern NSW Mother’s Day matchup on Sunday.
Jack Simmons secured the match from the penalty spot with 70 minutes played, after Adamstown ‘keeper, Daniel Eisenhauer felled Angus Thurgate.
The win moves the Jets up into third spot – in a share of second place with Edgeworth, and just one point off Broadmeadow Magic in first.
It was Adamstown who had the first real clear-cut chance of the game, with Connor Heydon finding a free header in the area with 24 minutes on the clock but his effort went over the bar.
The game was one played largely between the two boxes for much of the opening stanza. Kieran Hayes went closest for Newcastle in the opening half hour with a volley on the edge of the box which didn’t have the power or direction needed.
Maki Petratos had a go from the edge of the area himself as the ball found him from an attacking corner early into the second half, but a deflection saw the ball wide.
Hayes had another chance inside the penalty area in the 64th minute with the ball pinballing around, but he scooped his chance over the bar before his legs were taken out from under him.
When Simmons’ penalty was tucked away in the 70th minute to put the Jets ahead, the game began to open up as Adamstown went looking for an equaliser.
It created an opportunity just minutes later for Riley Smith as the Jets bounded down the field on the counter, but a stunning save from Eisenhauer denied a second goal.
The Buds ‘keeper pulled off another sharp save moments later to deny Angus Thurgate, as both teams continued to stream forward – Adamstown looking for an equaliser, Newcastle chasing a sealer.
Ultimately though, another goal wasn’t forthcoming and the Jets clinched their fifth win of the season.
