The LA Galaxy have won the 2010 MLS Supporters’ Shield as a result of their 2-1 win over FC Dallas tonight at The Home Depot Center. That result gave the Galaxy an 18-7-5 record for 59 points, which were the most in MLS, three more than Real Salt Lake, who finished second in the West.

By winning the Supporters- Shield, the Galaxy earn home field advantage throughout the 2010 MLS Cup Playoffs and earn a spot in Group Play of the 2011/12 CONCACAF Champion League, bypassing the Preliminary Round, the stage at which LA were eliminated from the competition earlier this year.
This is the third time in the club-s history that the Galaxy have won the Supporters- Shield, also doing so in 1998 when they recorded an MLS-record 68 points and in 2002 when they finished with an MLS-best 51 points en route to winning their first MLS Cup. In the first 14 years of MLS, five teams have won the MLS Cup in the same year as they won the Supporters- Shield with the Columbus Crew last accomplishing the feat in 2008.
The Galaxy-s quest for a third MLS Cup championship will begin in Seattle as they face the Seattle Sounders FC in a two-leg, aggregate goal Western Conference Semifinal Series. The Galaxy finished the MLS regular season in first place in the Western Conference with a 18-7-5 record for 59 points, earning them a matchup with the Sounders, who finished fourth in the Western Conference with a 14-10-6 record for 48 points.
The winner of this series will advance to the Western Conference Championship, which will be played at the home of the game-s higher seed during the second weekend of November. The winner of that will then advance to MLS Cup 2010, which will be played at BMO Field in Toronto, Canada on Sunday, November 21 at 5:30 p.m. (PT).
