Max Burgess named Captain for 2026/27 Season

Max Burgess was unveiled as the Club’s A-League Men’s Captain for the 2026/27 season, with Joe Shaughnessy also named as Vice-Captain

Max first signed for the Club in the 2014/15 season, playing five matches towards the back-end of that campaign. He returned to the Club at the beginning of last season, bring over a decades worth of experience to a young team. He played a key role in the Club winning both the Premiers Plate and Australia Cup for the first time, scoring and earning player of the match honours in the Cup Final.

Burgess already has plenty of leadership experience, taking the armband several times last season in Kosta Grozos’s absence. When speaking to the media on Thursday afternoon, Max expressed his delight at being named skipper by Head Coach Mark Milligan

“We spoke about it a couple weeks ago. It’s a huge honour and privilege to lead this group, it’s a special group and a special club so yeah, a huge honour.”

Defender Joe Shaughnessy was also named vice-captain. Shaughnessy has previous experience in a leadership role, having served as Captain at his previous club, Dundee FC.

“It’s good, it’s a real honour to be given that responsibility and to be able to help out Max (Burgess) with whatever he needs, as well as be an example for the young lads.”
