The Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets youth team have kicked-off their NBN Northern NSW State League campaign with a 1-0 win over Valentine FC at Cahill Oval today.

Only a matter of minutes into their debut match, the Jets went ahead through Australian Under 17s international Luke Remington.

Remington was on hand to blast the ball into the back of the net after Dino Fajkovic-s original shot was parried away by the Valentine FC goalkeeper.

Kael Bradbury had a chance to make it 2-0 a short time later, but his powerful drive was stopped by a sharp reflex save.

The Jets dominated possession for the majority of the first 45 minutes, however they were unable to find the finishing touch for a two-goal buffer at halftime.

Newcastle continued to keep the ball well after the break, but neither side were able to create any clear-cut chances.

That was until Remington almost notched a brace with a low driven effort from a tight angle that required another good save from the Valentine goalkeeper.

Things were made a little bit easier for the Jets midway through the second half when a Valentine player was sent off for a bad challenge on Fajkovic that forced the striker to leave the field.

The Jets nearly capitalised on the extra man when a good run and cut-back from James Virgili set-up Kael Bradbury, but again the Valentine keeper was on hand to smother the shot.

As the match drew to a close the Jets had other opportunities to put the icing on the cake, but were unable to get the second goal they were searching for and had to settle for a 1-0 victory.
