Ins & Outs: Deans names squad for Mariners

inout

Newcastle Jets Coach Craig Deans will call on the younger brigade to step up in Tuesday’s clash against the Central Coast.

Missing five players to national team duty and a handful to injury, the likes of Lucas Mauragis and Archie Goodwin will have an opportunity to flex their muscles.

“At halftime last week, it was pretty obvious at who we were going to be looking at to come in,” Deans said.

“Lucas and Archie came on at halftime. They both contributed to the game in a positive way … they’ve trained well again this week.

“It’s a good opportunity for not only those two but some other players who haven’t had much game time to put their hand up in training and earn an opportunity to start a game.”

In a blow to the Jets, Apostolos Stamatelopoulos has been a late scratching despite being named in the squad to face the Mariners.

“AP is injured,” Deans revealed.

“Small calf tear, strain. Whatever you want to call it. He’s probably out for a week or too.

“Val (Yuel) will come back into the squad. We haven’t got a huge amount of players left now. We’ve had the three Olyroos plus Liridon (Krasniqi) and Abi (Syahrian Abimanyu) are gone. We’ve lost five players to national team duty.”
