A pleasing result against the Roar

There were a number of positives to come out of the match says coach Gary van Egmond.

The Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets return home on Sunday with three-points for the first time this season after a 1-nil win over second-placed Brisbane Roar.

Captain Jobe Wheelhouse scored the only goal of the match midway through the first half and despite Brisbane dominating possession the Jets didn-t let go of their lead.

For coach Gary van Egmond, there were a number of positives to come out of the match.

“To win away from home and especially against Brisbane Roar is very pleasing,” he said after the game.

“What was also pleasing about the result was the way they carried out the instructions on the park, the ability to retain possession, especially in the first half and then in the second half, the determination and grit that they showed.

“To come away with a clean sheet against Brisbane is no mean feat.

“We are happy we get three points, we are happy we don-t concede and we are looking forward to Sydney FC next week.”

The away game against the Roar was the Jets- third game in eight days, causing a rotation of players and tactics.

“We played Wednesday and it was going to be tough to back up and we knew it was going to be a tough slog, hence we played the way we played,” van Egmond added.

“We still have to get better in regards to how we control the game and Brisbane are still the benchmark in regards to how you should be looking to play.

“There are tactics that still spoil the way they play and we have played much better than we did tonight but didn-t come away with the points.

“I think for us to play Adelaide in Bathurst, then Roar away and come away with four points is fantastic and now we have eight days to recover.”

As the Jets prepare for Sydney FC, they will again be forced into changes for this week-s team.

“We lose Ben Kantarovski with Olyroos duties and suspensions will start to have an impact but on the whole our squad is pretty fit at the moment,” van Egmond said.

“You put a few wins together and you shoot up the table, that is what we have to do.“
