Duncan: New recruits, playing style, leadership

Duncan

The Newcastle Jets started pre-season training this week and goalkeeper Jack Duncan is relishing the intense sessions under new Manager, Arthur Papas.

Papas has wasted no time in implementing his brand of football and raising the bar at training.

Embracing the high-intensity approach, Duncan believes it will position the team well for the season ahead.

“It gives us the best chance to build for the new season,” Duncan said.

“Every day on the training park is really important.

“We have to work hard to give ourselves the best opportunity to be successful.”

After making 16 appearances during the 2020/21 A-League campaign, Duncan is looking to solidify his spot between the sticks.

“I see myself as the number one keeper,” Duncan said.

“It’s what I want and I really enjoy the style of football that Papas plays.”

Having grown into a leader over the years, Duncan intends on helping guide the next generation of players coming through.

“Towards the back end of last season, we found some positives,” Duncan said.

“The local players coming through is really good and hopefully we can help them establish themselves in the team.

“Trying to give energy to the boys is part of the job and I’ll look to give the players a boost if they’re looking tired because that is what we will be about this year.”

The Jets have made inroads in the transfer market with a host of new players set to link up soon with the squad for pre-season.

Duncan welcomed the new arrivals and considers the new recruits to be crucial for the upcoming campaign.

“Matthew Jurman is very experienced, and Cameron Devlin is a fantastic young player from what I’ve seen,” Duncan said.

“Looking forward to them coming in and seeing what they can add to the team.”
