The Charlestown City Blues under 14-s team coached by Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets defender Taylor Regan have won the prestigious Kanga Cup junior football tournament in Canberra this week.

Regan coaches the Charlestown team during his spare time and caught up with his young protégés when they attended the Jets- trial game against the Canberra Rockets at McKellar Park on Wednesday night.

However, with Regan busy with his training commitments during the Jets- four-day camp in the nation-s capital, Jim Foley took charge of the Blues under 14-s at the largest International youth football tournament in the southern hemisphere.

Charlestown advanced to the finals after finishing equal first in their pool alongside John Paul College with two wins and one draw.

They notched a convincing 6-2 win in their quarter-final match against the Leichhardt Lions before defeating Shellharbour 3-1 in the semi-final.

In the final, Charlestown once again faced off against John Paul College. The two sides drew 4-4 when they met during the group stage of the tournament.

On this occasion however, Charlestown proved to be the stronger side, securing the title with a 5-0 victory.

“To win a junior football tournament as big as the Kanga Cup is a great achievement for these kids and I-m sure it-s something they-ll remember for a long time to come,” Regan said.

“By all reports they played very well during the tournament and I-m proud of the way they represented the Newcastle football community.”
