ALM MATCH REPORT: Drawn Derby in Matchweek One

The Jets came from behind twice to secure a 2-2 draw with their derby rivals, the Central Coast Mariners

The opening few minutes were what you would expect from a derby, with heavily challenges flying in across the park. Patrick Wood came close to opening the scoring, but Redmayne did well to close him down and block the shot, denying Wood his maiden Jets goal.

The Mariners would draw first blood, after Auglah skipped inside, earned and converted a penalty, giving the Mariners the lead 11 minutes in. Dobson was given a yellow for a late, heavy challenge on Donnell, before Burgess also saw yellow after a small skirmish with Auglah in which the Mariners wide man was also shown yellow. Mariners would take the one-goal advantage into the break.

Patrick Wood would equalise less than five minutes into the second half. Joe Shaughnessy would meet Lolley’s cross, heading it back into the box where Wood would smash it past Redmayne.

However, the Mariners would win and score another penalty, this time from Lavale, giving the Mariners a 2-1 lead.

Lavale would undo his own work, chesting a ball down inside the box which bounced into the back of his own net, equalising at 2-2 with just over ten minutes to play

The Jets probed the Mariners backline further, but were unable to secure a winning goal, heading back to Newcastle with a point. The A-League Men’s side returns next Saturday, when they host Macarthur FC at McDonald Jones Stadium. Click HERE to purchase a ticket.
