Match Report: Jets fall short in Shepparton

A late goal from Melbourne Victory forward Holly Furphy sealed a 2-1 win for Melbourne Victory against the Newcastle Jets on Saturday evening.

The Jets had the brighter start of the two sides with Josie Allan testing Victory goalkeeper Courtney Newbon inside the first 10 minutes.

Allan was a livewire early on for Stephen Hoyle’s side as she tested Newbon again just minutes later before Jets striker Alexis Collins was the next player to be denied by the Melbourne shot-stopper.

Both sides traded shots on their opposing goal however neither side could find the breakthrough in the first 45.

The hosts found the opening goal of the match in the 63rd minute when a Alana Jančevski corner was put into her own goal by Jets defender Claudia Cicco.

The Jets soon found an equaliser when Josie Allan was fouled in the box. Kelli Brown stepped up and made no mistake to make it 1-1 in the 74th minute.

In the 81st minute the hosts regained their lead when Holly Furphy curled in a brilliant effort from outside the box to give Jeff Hopkins side a 2-1 lead.

Stephen Hoyle’s side next face the Western Sydney Wanderers on Friday, 13th February at CommBank Stadium.
