With one A-League championship in his player honours, Jets midfielder Ruben Zadkovich is hoping this season will allow him to secure a second title.

Beginning his professional playing career for local clubs in the Wollongong region, Zadkovich says playing A-League football has always been in his sights.

“Playing professional football is something that I-ve always dreamt of. It-s something I seemed to have a natural talent for and it-s just evolved from there,” Zadkovich said.

Zadkovich began his professional career with the Queens Park Rangers before joining Notts County in England between 2004 and 2006. Then in the 2005/2006 A-League season, Zadkovich joined the realms of Australian professional football when he signed with Sydney FC.

Australian born and raised, Zadkovich admits that playing professional football in Europe was a completely different experience to playing in Australia.

“Playing in Europe is very different, it-s a lot bigger in Europe. The spectacle and exhibition of the sport is so much more intense and there-s more pressure on the players. The whole thing is just bigger,” Zadkovich explains.

But this difference has not stemmed his drive for another A-League championship title.

“I-m hoping to get another A-League championship out of my next two contracted years with the Jets. I won one playing for Sydney FC in the 2005/2006 season and I-m hoping to win one this year with Jets too.”

About to commence the second season of his three year contract with the Jets, Zadkovich is looking forward to the start of the competition.

“This pre-season has been toughest and longest I have ever played,” he added.

“At first it was hard for everyone to get motivated to train when the games were so far away, but now that they-re closer everyone is excited and keen to get out there and start playing.”

The upcoming season kicks off on October 8th with a home game against Melbourne Heart, and the team is quietly confident.

“We-ve got a much stronger side than last year. We have a strong player list with not too many people out with injuries, so we-ve got all the attributes for a good and successful season.”

But there are still some pre-season games to play, including next Saturday-s big test against Sydney FC in Cessnock.
