Top 5: Most appearances by our women

When the W-League (now A-League Women’s) first started back in 2007, the Newcastle Jets just had to be involved.

To date, 114 women have stepped out in a Jets jersey, however some have done it over, and over, and over again.

In preparation for a big 2021/22 season, we we’re acknowledging those women as we take a look back at the five players who have made the most appearances for the Club in the A-League Women’s competition.

Clare Wheeler – 67 games

Clare was a local product who moved her way up the ranks since being a part of the Club at the age of 13.

The Coffs Harbour-native spent her early years playing at Adamstown Rosebud before joining the academy, and when she was 15, she made her A-League Women’s debut, and featured for the team on many occasions in her first few seasons.

Whilst playing at the Club, Wheeler made 10 appearances for the Young Matildas, and although she moved on to join Sydney FC in 2020, she’ll still always be considered a stalwart of our women’s side.

She is now plying her trade in Denmark with the defending league champions, Fortuna Hjorring, and even made her Matildas debut recently.

Hannah Brewer – 93 games

Originally from Gosford, Brewer joined the Club in 2008 at the ripe age of 15. At the time, she was the youngest member of the squad, but since then has grown into a veteran of the league.

In her first stint, she appeared 46 times in a Jets jersey before she left to join Seattle Sounders in USA.

The wide defender linked back up with us in 2017, and has been here ever since, even scoring her first A-League Women’s goal in 2018.

She’s become an integral part of the Club as a whole, and a key leader for our women.

Cass Davis – 97 games

One of our co-captains, Davis hasn’t missed a game since her debut in 2013. She truly is Mrs. Consistent.

Whether she’s been in the defensive line, or in the heart of the midfield, she has always been reliable and a strong leader.

We’re just hoping she can nab her first A-League Women’s goal in 2021/22.

Tara Andrews – 107 games

She’s our golden striker and has featured for the Club over 100 times since joining back in 2009 when she was 15.

Last season she became the Newcastle Jets’ greatest goal scorer and at just the age of 27 still, there’s plenty of time to score a whole heap more.

In 2014, she tried her hand over in America with the Colorado Pride, but after one season, returned back to us where she has been ever since. She even pulled on the green and gold on a couple of occasions in 2015.

Gema Simon – 128 games

Our other Captain Fantastic. The girl from Armidale started with the Club in the inaugural season and spent six years here, scoring four goals, before trying her luck in the USA for Ottawa.

She also played a season with Melbourne Victory (we won’t hold that against her), but returned to after one season.

Along the way, she’s enjoyed successful loan stints at Suwon in Japan, and Avaldsnes in Norway, and has appeared for the Matildas on 11 occasions too.

She’s been our Player of the Year twice, and has been one of our most consistent players year in, year out.

Simon again is sharing the captaincy role in the W-League and we look forward to seeing just how many games she can amount, and maybe some trophies too, before she calls time on what’s been a tremendous career.
