Newcastle Jets striker Adam Taggart says hopes he can be a pinch hitter for the Socceroos during the FIFA World Cup, delivering attacking impetus and goals from the bench.

With Socceroos talisman Tim Cahill expected to lead the line for Australia during the World Cup, any playing time Taggart receives is most likely to come as a substitute.

The Hyundai A-League-s Golden Boot winner said his only focus if he gets on the pitch will be to find the back of the net.

“I think the only I thing I do is score goals, I can’t really do much else,” he said.

“Me personally as a striker goals are something I’m always focusing on. Away from training it’s something I’m working on all the time.

“Come the games, if I’m on the park that’s really the only thing I’m thinking about.

“Just like the keeper with keeping the ball out of the back of the net, I feel I can contribute by putting in the back of the net.”

Taggart said he was maintaining his sharpness through hard work in training to ensure he would be prepared to strike if given the chance for Australia.

“For me it’s about everyday training and if you get the opportunity you need to be ready,” he said.

“Everyone is involved in training every single day to make sure that whoever is called upon will know their job and their responsibility in the team.

“It’s not going to be first team and second team, everyone’s in it together.

“We’ve all got to put a shift in so if the opportunity comes I’ll be ready.”
