The Newcastle Jets hosted staff members, clients and supporters of the Big Issue Street Soccer program at last weekend-s home match against Wellington Phoenix.
This program engages people who in many cases have given up on counselling and traditional support systems and services.
Street Soccer staff work closely with their players, linking them to services that address issues including homelessness, substance abuse, family breakdown and mental illness.
The program promotes social inclusion and personal change and uses football to promote participation, commitment and team spirit.
Street Soccer players played a half-time demonstration game on-field, showcasing their skills and revelling in the match day atmosphere. For many this was a huge opportunity as living on the fringes of society does not make its easy to participate and contribute to everyday life.
Bill Robertson, Coach-Coordinator of the Newcastle Street Soccer Program thanks the Jets for hosting them at the match.
“It was a great day out for our guys and girls and a reward for the effort many of them are making to improve their personal situation,” Robertson said.
The Newcastle Jets are proud to support programs like Street Soccer and the difference they make in our community. Newcastle Street Soccer holds training sessions at the PCYC Broadmeadow, every Thursday from 3.30pm – 5.30pm, to get involved simply turn-up or email newcastlesoccer@bigissue.org.au
The Newcastle Jets- next home match is against Sydney FC at Hunter Stadium on Saturday night. Kick-off is 5.30pm.
