Report: Second half fightback not enough as Jets fall short in Melbourne

The Jets started brightly when Ash Brodigan almost poked the ball home to give the Jets and early lead however she was beaten to the ball by Victory keeper Casey Dumont.

The home side were awarded a penalty a minute later when Leia Puxty fouled Alana Murphy in the box. Melina Ayres converted from the spot to put Victory ahead 1-0.

Newcastle almost responded back instantly when Sarah Griffith found space down the left to put the ball into the box and force a smart save from Casey Dumont in the 11th minute.

Melbourne made it 3-0 after 18 minutes when Kayla Morrison headed home from a corner.

Morrison grabbed her second when she managed to poke the ball home from close range after Goad’s free-kick giving Melbourne Victory a 4-0 lead at the break.

The Jets started the second half brightly and were rewarded when Sarah Griffith curled in a spectacular shot from outside the 18-yard box to make it 4-1.

Ash Wilson’s side continued to push and Ash Brodigan lashed home from close range after Sarah Griffith had her shot blocked.

The home side made sure of the three points when Kayla Morrison tucked the ball away from close range after a scramble from a corner.

The Jets are back at No. 2 Sportsground on Friday night when they take on Brisbane Roar.
