Late winner sees Jets lose in Adelaide

We had our chances to win, but in the end, Adelaide United took the points from the exciting clash following a late winner in the final minutes.

It started in horrible fashion for the Jets after George Blackwood found an early opener latching onto a slicing ball from Craig Goodwin close to goal. Our side fired a few dangerous shots at goal through Beqa Mikeltadze, but nothing major troubled the goal.

The second half though saw us fight our way back into the game at Coopers Stadium. After multiple close calls for the Adelaide defence, we finally found our equaliser through Angus Thurgate who jumped onto a shot-turned-pass from Mikeltadze, and tapping it in from very close range.

Unfortunately though, a goal to Mohamed Toure just minutes before the end of regular time put the hosts back in the front, and we couldn’t find a second equaliser.

We now shift our focus to facing Wellington Phoenix at home next Friday night, for our Members Appreciation Match.

90+3′ Yuel wins a free-kick on the edge of the box out wide. Weier is up for it. It’s a great ball from Mikeltadze, but is well cleared by a defender.

90′ We tried to slide in behind the defence, and almost do, however our pass strays too far and goes over the by-line.

86′ CHANCE! Thurgate is slipped in behind the defence after a great pass from Penha. He tries to take on the last defender and curl it inside the far post, but it’s just that bit too high and wide for goal.

84′ Toure unleashes a shot from distance and goes extremely close to nestling in the bottom corner. A deflection sees it go wide.

82′ Arques and Hoffman are now on the field.

76′ A Penha free-kick curls dangerously into the box. Elsey gets a head to it, but not enough to trouble the keeper.

74′ CHANCE! Yuel does some brilliant work, beating defenders on the edge of the box to open up a chance to shoot…but his cannoning shot is just that little bit too high.

73′ Reds receive a half-chance with a volley turned cross landing for the head of Toure – but his header is wide.

68′ OFFSIDE! Adelaide put it in the back of the net from a headed free-kick, but the offside flag saves us.

66′ GOAL!!! ADE 1-1 NEW Angus Thurgate jumps on the end of a Mikeltadze shot, and knocks it in from very close range!

60′ We look certain to find a way through the Adelaide defence, but they scramble well and stop Yuel from getting a decent shot away close to goal.

58′ CHANCE! Yuel makes an instant impact, knocking a ball into the box and it finds Mikeltadze open in the box, but his shot is well blocked.

56′ Yuel and Wilson come onto the pitch! Brandon Wilson becomes Newcastle Jet #207.

54′ CHANCE! It’s Boumal again who goes close! Penha lays it off to him. He does well to beat a defender, but his shot is skied over the goal.

52′ CHANCE! Boumal goes so close to scoring our first! Thurgate puts in a brilliant cross, Mikeltadze dummies over the top, and it falls for Boumal, but his low shot is saved well.

51′ Mikeltadze tries to direct a header towards goal, but unfortunately it doesn’t have the necessary power to really trouble the goal.

49′ Tratt goes ever so close for Adelaide, jumping on a free header inside the box. His header almost edges the upright as it goes wide.

46′ We’re underway for the second half!

44′ Boumal tries to dribble through the box and almost finds a way through, but is dispossessed at the last.

42′ We receive a free-kick in a dangerous area. Penha curls it into the box, and it falls to the back stick where Jurman attempts to cut it back. It’s cleared away but leaves Siatravanis with a chance. His shot is high.

37′ Goodwin again causes headaches for our defence, sliding in behind and crossing a dangerous ball into the box. Luckily the shot is blocked and out for a corner. The corner comes to nothing.

36′ Possession and passing accuracy almost identical at the moment. Adelaide just edging us with 51% possession, and 85% passing accuracy to our 84%

29′ Another halt in play as Lopez receives some attention

28′ SAVE! Weier brilliantly intercepts a cross with a punching effort, before Elsey then puts his body on the line on the follow up, stopping Adelaide’s shot.

24′ Goodwin comes within a whisker of scoring – smashing a shot outside the box that tickles the upright.

23′ Game is briefly halted as the physio checks out Weier’s fingers. Fortunately he’s continuing on.

19′ CHANCE! Mikeltadze fires a bullet goalwards but it’s well stopped.

18′ A cross almost lands for Mikeltadze at the back post, but Lopez gets an important touch away.

16′ Mikeltadze latches onto the end of a nice Boumal cross, but his shot inside the box is blocked.

16′ Kitto receives the first yellow card of the match

15′ CHANCE! Boumal comes close with a left-footed strike, looking to curl it into the side of the goal. But it doesn’t curl quickly enough.

13′ A dangerous ball flies into our box from an Adelaide free-kick. Luckily it’s clear away from Ibusuki.

12′ It’s a battle in the midfield at the moment as both sides look to control possession.

9′ We run at the Adelaide defence and Mikeltadze fires a shot at goal after turning a defender. It’s well saved though.

4′ Goal – ADE 1-0 NEW Blackwood opens the scoring coming off an assist from Goodwin.

2′ Mikeltadze has the first shot of the game, but nothing comes of it.
