Match Report: Late Max Cooper Header Delivers Victory for Youth team

Youth team huddle vs Northern Tigers away, 2025

A 92nd minute header from Max Cooper ensured the Infrabuild Academy Boys Youth team would leave North Turramurra with three points on Saturday night as they defeated Northern Tigers 3-2.

It was Northern Tigers who would draw first blood, as FNSW League One Mens golden boot leader Kai Denton added a goal in the 28th minute. That goal would be enough to see the Tigers go into the sheds leading the Youth team 1-0.

The Jets were next to score, as Oliver Cockle scored his ninth goal of the season for the Youth team. Xavier Bertoncello received the ball, turning his man before sliding an inch-perfect pass through the Northern Tigers defence into the path of Oli Cockle, who smashed his effort past the keeper into the far bottom corner.

However, less than ten minutes later Kai Denton would find a second goal, giving Northern Tigers their second lead of the game. Unfortunately for the home side, their lead would not last long. The Youth team pushed for an equaliser, and they found it through Xavier Bertoncello. Oli Cockle would drive a low cross into the box, which would only be half cleared by the Tigers defence. Oli would react quickest, getting a touch on the loose ball before having his legs swiped out from underneath him by the defender. Penalty awarded. Bertoncello smashed his effort high and hard, giving the keeper no chance of saving it, 2-2.

From the 78th minute until the 92nd, the scores were deadlocked. The Jets probed for a goal but were not quite able to grab the elusive winner. That was until the 92nd minute. The Youth team were awarded a free kick out on the left wing. Angus Muddle stepped up and swung a ball into the box. Max Cooper, making just his fifth appearance of the season for the Youth team, would leap above the rest to head the ball into the back of the net. Pandemonium ensued, with the whole team running to the corner where the entire bench meet them.

The Youth team managed to do enough to repel the Tigers for the few remaining minutes, as they were able to seal a magnificent come from behind 3-2 victory against the league leaders. In the next game, the U20s were defeated by Northern Tigers 2-0.
