Match Report: Jets rue early goal as Adelaide snatch win

The Newcastle Jets fought until full time, but a first-half goal from Stefan Mauk was enough to secure Adelaide the three points.

Adelaide put the Jets under heavy pressure early on in the first half, with chances falling to Archie Goodwin and Ethan Alagaich, who could not beat Ryan Scott.

It wasn’t long after when Adelaide took the lead. Kitto made a run into the box, before squaring a ball to Archie, who fired a shot from close range straight at scotty, who couldn’t help but parry it back into the box, where it fell to Stefan Mauk who tapped into the empty net. Adelaide with an early lead.

The Jets were able to get some possession and create some half-chances of their own here and there, with Lachie Rose finding Eli Adams in the box, who was unable to head home from close range.

Adelaide came forward again, with Archie getting in behind and shooting. Ryan Scott was able to get a piece of his shot before Šušnjar was able to clear the rebound off the goal-line. Newcastle was able to fire back with an attack of thebair own, as Clayton Taylor’s cross almost found its way into the Adelaide net, before Delianov was able to turn it over the bar.

The Jets almost found an equaliser on the stroke of halftime, as Clayton Taylor fired a ball into Lachie Rose, who couldn’t keep his shot down as it thundered into the crossbar. Adelaide took the 1-0 lead going into the half.

Newcastle started the second half well, with Clayton taking on his man before finding Eli at the back post who won us a corner. Ben Gibson soon replaced Lachie Rose, who showed fight in his league debut for the club. Just after the 60th minute, Adelaide were reduced to 10 men, as Ben Folami was shown a straight red for violent conduct after striking Phil Cancar in the face.

Now with a man advantage, Newcastle began to pile on the pressure. Ben Gibson almost found an equaliser, but some last ditch defending from Adelaide denied him his maiden A-League goal. The Jets continued to drive forward in numbers, but couldn’t find that final ball or shot. The final score, 1-0 to Adelaide United.

The Newcastle Jets now face an away trip to face Perth Glory.
