Match Report: Jets go down in New Year’s clash

The Newcastle Jets have suffered a 2-0 defeat after two goals against the run of play towards the end of the first half proved to be the difference at McDonald Jones Stadium this afternoon.

Both sides started off strong for the first game of 2023, with the two sides creating multiple attacking chances.

After settling into the game in the 29th minute, The Jets defence had to deal with a couple of small chances which the visitors couldn’t capitalise on.

The 34th minute saw a chance for Jets when Reno Piscopo took a shot from long range, which was tipped over the bar by Sydney goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne. 

In the 37th minute Sydney FC took the lead when Adam Le Fondre scored off a cross from Diego Caballo. 

Sydney cemented their lead in 40th minute when Robert Mak scored from close range, taking the score 0-2. 

The Jets began the second half with a strong attack, not shying away from taking shots. 

In the 65th minute, Sydney had another chance when Max Burgess pounced on a loose ball, Jordan Elsey recovered well to keep the scoreline the same. 

The Jets kept coming at Sydney FC, with a great chance in the 70thminute, just grazing across the goal line. 

The Jets continued the second half attacking Sydney’s goal, however, were unable to get the ball over the line with Jordan Elsey going close, only to be denied by Andrew Redmayne. 

Sydney FC held on to finish the game with a 0-2 scoreline.

The Newcastle Jets are next in action when they travel to Campbelltown Sports Stadium.
