Report: Jets go down in entertaining Australia Cup clash

The Newcastle Jets have been eliminated from the Australia Cup after going down 3-2 to Brisbane Roar at Maitland Sportsground on Monday night.

The Jets had the first real chance of the match in the seventh minute when Clayton Taylor put in a cross which was flicked away at the back post by Louis Zabala with Trent Buhagiar lurking at the back post unmarked.

The Jets took the lead in the 11th minute when Buhagiar found the back of the net with a lovely one-two from Dane Ingham.

Buhagiar almost doubled the lead a minute later, only to be denied by a brilliant close-range save from Roar goalkeeper Macklin Freke.

The Jets continued to assault the Roar’s goal. Buhagiar delivered a cut-back to Carl Jenkinson who had his shot destined for the goal, only to be denied by Freke once again.

Jets goalkeeper Ryan Scott was forced into action in the 39th minute when he was forced to deny Carlos Armiento who found space in the box.

The visitors managed to find an equaliser right on the stroke of half-time when Brisbane crowded the penalty area from a corner and the ball was forced into the back of the net by Jets goalkeeper Ryan Scott.

The second half started at a frantic pace and Clayton Taylor announced himself to the Maitland crowd when his half volley fizzled the back of the net past a helpless Freke in the 58th minute.

It took the visitors four minutes to respond when a freakish deflection found its way to Louis Zabala who made it 2-2.

The Jets were dealt a blow in the 75th minute when Brandon O’Neill received his second yellow card of the match for a foul on Ayom Majok.

The match finished level after 90 minutes with extra time looming.

With the visitors having the extra player on the field the home side were forced to sit back as Brisbane looked to press. Majok found space on the wing for Brisbane however his shot sailed wide of the goal in the 100th minute.
