Match Report: Bertoncello Brace Secures Win For Youth Team

A first half brace from Xavier Bertoncello alongside a Garang Arou header sealed a 3-0 victory over Dulwich Hill for the Infrabuild Academy Boys Youth Team.

The first chance of the game fell to the Jets. Makye Buettner swung in a cross from the left side of the pitch which found Bertoncello unmarked in the box. Xavier took a touch before stabbing the ball towards goal, which was held comfortably by the Dulwich Hill keeper.

Xavier would make no mistake with his next chance. Janni Rafty found an unmarked Oli Cockle, who took the ball down the right wing before delivering a pinpoint cross into the path of Bertoncello, who tapped the ball past the keeper and into the net to make it 1-0.

Bertoncello had another chance just minutes later, after a mistake from the Dulwich defender left him with a golden opportunity to double the lead. Unfortunately, the Dulwich keeper was equal to the shot, keeping the lead at one.

Xavier Bertoncello would eventually grab a second goal. Ethan Debono lost his man before slicing through the defence with a pin-point pass that found Xavier. He took a touch past the keeper before finishing into the back of the empty goal. 2-0 to the Jets 31 minutes in.

The scores would remain at 2-0 going into the break, with the Jets dominating proceedings in the opening stanza. The script would flip for the second half, as Dulwich came out firing as they looked to grab a foothold back in the game.

Despite this, the Jets would grab a third goal in the 57th minute. A Jets corner was only half-cleared by the Dulwich defence. Noah Miller got on the end of the loose ball before swinging a delivery back into the box. Garang Arou leapt highest, beating the keeper to the ball to score his fourth goal of the season.

From there, Dulwich pushed even harder to try find a goal, but the Jets defence held strong. 3-0 would remain the result as the full time whistle came, with the Youth team secured their tenth win of the season. Xavier Bertoncello was rewarded with player of the match for his first-half brace. He had this to say on the game.

“We started well, got two early goals, but we should’ve put them to bed in the first half. We could have had six in the first half. The second half could’ve been better again, but we’re happy for the clean sheet and the three points.”

Earlier in the day, the U20s won 3-2, with Shiwa Dul, Billy Eick and Jackson Chambers scoring for the Jets.
