Local juniors a priority for Jets

Young-guns James Virgili and Sam Gallaway have inked new deals with the Hunter-based club in a boost ahead of the final games of the Hyundai A-League 2010/11 season.

The club has taken its first steps in consolidating its long-term future with the signing of Hunter juniors James Virgili and Sam Gallaway to it’s Hyundai A-League playing list.

The signing of the two local juniors for the next two seasons is in keeping with the Tinkler Sports Group policy of providing talented local players the opportunity to play at the elite level.

Executive Chairman of the Tinkler Sports Group Ken Edwards said today:

“As part of the ongoing strategy it is exciting not just for our young players to represent the region, but also a great opportunity for them to showcase their skill and talent with other elite and marquee players with whom we are currently in negotiation.”

These appointments are in line with the resolution of the Football Advisory Board that our National Youth League side will comprise 80% of it roster from the Northern NSW region.

Ken Edwards supported the Board-s new policy, adding, “Our current NYL list contains just over 37% of local talent which we believe is not acceptable.

“It is fundamental that our NYL side reflects the region and provides a football pathway as a career. This strategy will function as a platform for local talent to demonstrate their wares and provide them an opportunity to graduate to the A-League side and represent their region with pride on a national podium. James and Sam are a prime example of our policy and hopefully will form the nucleus of our side in years to come ”.

Virgili and Gallaway add to the local presence in the Newcastle Jets A-League roster which currently consists of Ben Kennedy, Ben Kantarosvki, Jobe Wheelhouse and the recently re-signed Taylor Regan.
