Kantarovski receives Joeys call up

Ben Kantarovski has today been selected in the Australian team to compete in the AFC Under-16 Championships in Uzbekistan.

Newcastle Jets- boom youngster Ben Kantarovski has today been selected in the Qantas Joeys squad to tour Uzbekistan in next month-s Asian Football Confederation Under-16 Championship.

The Australian team has been drawn in Group C alongside Saudi Arabia, China, and Turkmenistan in Round 1 of the competition. The tournament also serves as a qualifier for next year-s FIFA Under-17 World Cup.

Kantarovski has been a regular fixture in the Qantas Joeys- squad of late, and has this season burst onto the Hyundai A-League scene with 2 impressive performances for the Jets in the opening rounds of the 2008/09 competition.

Equally adept in both midfield and defence, the Lambton High School student has displayed skills and maturity which belie his tender age of 16; attributes which are sure to stand him in good stead as he progresses through the National Team setup.

Newcastle Jets CEO, John Tsatsimas, today congratulated Kantarovski on his well deserved selection.

“It-s certainly pleasing to see Ben get the recognition he deserves at a National Team level and no doubt he-ll continue his fine form for the Joeys.”

“Well done to Ben, we wish him all the best on his travels, we-re very proud to have such a well rounded young man as part of our club, and we look forward to having him back with the Jets in Newcastle in the near future,” Mr. Tsatsimas said.

Whilst on international duty, Kantarovski will miss the following 2 rounds of the Hyundai A-League competition, but will return to Newcastle in time for the Jets- Round 8 clash with Melbourne Victory at EnergyAustralia Stadium on Saturday, 18 October.
