The Newcastle Jets Youth Team has been defeated 2-0 by the Sydney FC Youth Team at the Sydney Football Stadium this afternoon.

Two late penalties to Sky Blues striker Kerem Bulut was enough to get the home side the three National Youth League points despite some enterprising play from Newcastle.

The visitors started brightly enough, with winger Will Angel receiving a delightful ball from goalkeeper Dion Shaw in the 14th minute, before having his stinging 25-yard drive deflected wide for a corner.

Ten minutes later and Bulut had a wonderful opportunity to give his side the lead when Hussein Akil whipped in a great ball from the right. However, a fine fingertip save by Shaw saw Bulut-s header crash against the bar before being cleared.

The Jets pressed on looking for the opening goal for the remainder of the half and looked dangerous in the dying moments of the first half. Mirjan Pavlovic, Damian Brosque and Matt Sim all going close to breaking the deadlock, only to be denied by some fine work by Sydney goalkeeper Nenad Vekic.

In the 71st minute Bulut was adjudged to have been brought down just inside the area and the Sydney marksman stepped up to convert the spot kick to give the home side the lead.

Moments later and Brosque looked to have equalised when he hit a stunning left-footed volley from 25-yards, only to see his strike dip millimetres over the bar and onto the roof of the net.

However, the points were all but won five minutes from time when Bulut was again awarded a penalty, and again he converted to seal the victory for the home side.

Coach Craig Deans was not dispirited after the match, despite the scoreline.

“There were periods in the game where we played some good football, and really we were on the front foot at times.”

“We didn-t take our chances though and in the end that probably cost us in terms of the result. Having said that, there was plenty that we can take out of that game as we build through the season,” he said.
