Newcastle Jets Youth have begun their National Youth League 2009/10 campaign with a 3-2 victory over Brisbane Roar Youth at EnergyAustralia Stadium this afternoon.

A double by Jason Naidovski and a fine headed goal by new recruit Scott Balderson was enough to see Craig Deans- men home, despite Roar hitting the back of the net through Stefan Vrbesic and Tim Smits.

The Jets showed attacking intent direct from the kick off, with William Angel forcing a smart save from Roar ‘keeper Matthew Acton inside 20 seconds.

On 20 minutes the Jets took the lead their early impetus had warranted them, with Naidovski latching on to an inch perfect Damian Brosque cross.

The Jets doubled their lead just five minutes later with Balderson rising highest to head home another great Brosque cross, this time direct from a corner.

Newcastle had the chance to all but sew up the three NYL points just a minute later, however Qantas Young Socceroo James Virgili-s shot was smartly saved by Acton.

Roar began working their way back into the match in the latter part of the opening stanza, however new Jets Youth keeper Robbie Kolak was looking unbeatable in goal.

Ten minutes into the second half Road made it 2-1 courtesy of a low Vrbesic strike from the edge of the area.

Midway through the half though and Naidovski doubled his tally with a superb curling strike from 15 yards, giving Acton no chance.

Moments from time and Tim Smits clawed back a consolation goal with a header from close range to make the final score 3-2.

After the game, Deans was understandably pleased with his side-s start to the season.

“Of course the result was a good one, and it-s definitely good to kick a season off with three points. In terms of confidence it-s a great way for the boys to start.”

“Beyond the result there were plenty of positives to that we can take out of the game. We played some good fluent football in patches, but on the flipside we-ll be working on maintaining that for longer periods,” he explained.
