The Newcastle Jets youth team secured a 2-1 win over Weston Workers FC at Thomas and Coffey Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Jets took a 1-0 lead on the stroke of halftime thanks to a powerful strike from outside the box by Mitch Oxborrow.

Kale Bradbery extended the Jets’ lead late in the second half before Weston score a late goal to leave the final score at 2-1 in favour of the Jets.

Jets youth team coach Clayton Zane said that Weston pushed the Jets hard throughout the match.

“Weston made life very difficult early on for our team with their direct approach which was in part due to our goalkeeping situation,” Zane said.

“We tried to protect Sam Gallaway in the goals and he did well overall considering being thrown in goals last minute.

“We weathered the storm a bit in the first 20 minutes and to Weston’s credit they had some good chances early on.

“Once we settled in we took back control of the match with Mitch Oxborrow, Jacob Pepper and Luke Remington finding more space in the middle of the field.

“The second goal settled the nerves and we had a few chances to finish Weston off but they made a game of it with a late goal.

“It was a good test against a direct team with experience and all teams in this competition know this is a hard place to come and win matches so it was a real credit to the team to pick up three points.”
