Jets wary of winless Roar

Newcastle Jets winger David Carney says the Jets are expecting a difficult test against Brisbane Roar at Hunter Stadium on Friday night, despite the defending Champions’ having lost their opening four matches of the season.

Carney said the Jets are expecting to face a highly motivated Roar outfit as both sides look to get their 2014/15 Hyundai A-League campaigns off and running.

“I’m sure they’ll be having a lot of discussions about their performances having not won a game yet,” Carney said

“They’ll be desperate to kick-start their season with a victory against us, but we’re in the same boat because we’re looking to finish off those starts that we’ve had.

“It’s going to be a difficult task because they’ve got a lot of quality players, but I’m sure if we play to our capabilities, we can do a job.”

Carney said he felt the Jets’ performance in their 2-2 draw with Melbourne Victory at Hunter Stadium last weekend was a step in the right direction.

“I think the performance from everyone was more positive,” Carney said.

“I thought we really took the game to them, we were 2-nil up and there were a lot of positives there, it was just unfortunate we couldn’t hold onto the lead.

“Three games this season we’ve gone ahead and you expect to keep the lead, and it’s a lot of points we’ve lost because of that.

“We can’t get down on ourselves though, we need to look at the positives because we do seem to be playing a lot better now.

“We’re on the way up, we’re scoring goals now and we just need to cut out the little errors and we’ll be OK.”

Carney said the impending return of the likes of Billy Celeski and Adrian Madaschi is likely to give the side an added boost in the coming weeks.

“The gaffa has been forced to experiment a little bit with the injuries, but we’ve just got to find that winning formula,” Carney said.

“The performances have been good and the players have been good. We changed the formation to a 4-3-3 last weekend and it seemed to work, so if we can build on that I think we’ll be fine.”
