Jets Coach, Branko Culina says last night-s trial game against New South Wales Premier League side, Southerland Sharks was a positive sign of Newcastle-s pre season preparations.

The strongest available side took to the pitch at Seymour Shaw Park, minus Jobe Wheelhouse who was a late withdrawal through illness.

Torrential rain in Sydney-s south proved no barrier as the Jets created early attacking opportunities but the Sharks managed to hold the Novocastrian side to nil all at half time.

Culina-s team changes would prove the difference after the break and Irish triallist, Vinny Faherty impressed in the opening minutes to capitalise on a James Virgili cross.

Chris Payne found the back of the net soon after to put Newcastle into a 2 – 0 lead. Sutherland did manage to find its way through Newcastle-s defence in the closing stages though to register on the score board for a 2 – 1 full time score line.

Culina says he was pleased with last night-s performance and star recruit, Tiago-s effort on debut was reflective on his positive attitude since joining the Jets.

“Tiago has only been with us for a week but from what I have seen so far, he is a real find for us,” he said.

“He has started to develop a good relationship with the team both on and off the field. Our trial games will only better that relationship.”

Jets supporters have every reason to be encouraged about the season ahead with key players Kasey Wehrman and Jason Culina yet to return from injury and Ben Kantarovski due back from Young Socceroos duties in around six weeks.

“We have been unlucky with a few injuries, particularly Kasey and Jason but I-m hoping to see Jason in full training by mid August.”

“Kasey is likely to be longer but there is every indication he will be fit for the end of the pre season roster.”

“We have had a horror run with heavy rain in recent weeks which has put some question marks over our pre season games but at least we were back on the pitch last night.”

“The team has been working extremely hard and we are looking good on the field. I-m looking forward to upcoming matches against Melbourne Heart and Sydney FC as a real indication of how we are progressing.”
