Jets settle for draw in entertaining contest

The Newcastle Jets Liberty A-League side have come away with a 2-2 draw in sweltering conditions in Adelaide on Friday afternoon.

After a cautious start from both sides the Jets soon settled into the match with Murphy Agnew testing Adelaide goalkeeper Annalee Grove into the first save of the match.

Agnew continued to threaten and soon found her way in behind the Reds backline to square the ball back for Lucy Johnson who scored the first goal of the match.

Adelaide had the chance to hit back almost instantly as Claire Coelho conceded a penalty to give the home side a chance to hit back. Coelho then turned from villain to hero as she saved the resulting spot kick from Maruschka Waldus to keep the score at 1-0.

The Jets kept the attack going and doubled the advantage when a smart ball from Emily Garnier in behind the Reds defence found Lauren Allan. The speedy winger kept her composure to put Gary van Egmond’s side up 2-0 heading into the break.

The home side started the second half with a response as Fiona Worts cross found it’s way to Katie Bowler who tucked away her shot make it 2-1.

As both sides looked to continue the attack, Jets goalkeeper Claire Coelho made a smart save to keep the score at 2-1 to deny Fiona Worts, palming the Adelaide striker’s shot onto the post.

Adelaide was able to come up with an equaliser with two minutes left to play as Emilia Murray ghosted in at the back post to catch the Jets off guard and send the home crowd wild.

Gary van Egmond’s side are next in action at No.2 Sportsground next Saturday as they host the Wellington Phoenix in their final game of the season.
