Jets post a 9-0 win

The Newcastle Jets have stunned the Bankstown Lions with a 9 – 0 trial match win at Jensen Park overnight.

In their most consistent and impressive performance of the pre-season so far, Newcastle went on the attack early when a Marco Jesic pass sent Tarek Elrich past his defender. Seconds later Ruben Zadkovich had a chance, only to send it sent sailing wide of the mark.

Jesic found himself back within range minutes later when Jacob Pepper broke through the Lions defence to register the Jets first goal of the night.

After torrential rain in Sutherland and freezing conditions in Bonnyrigg, last night-s hit out in Sefton was more suited to the A-League season proper climate and Newcastle was very much the team supporters have been anticipating for the year ahead.

Bankstown played some good football in patches but let themselves down at times with poor decisions in the midfield and the Jets capitalised on every possible opportunity.

Jeremy Brockie landed his second for the night on the back of a Lions defensive misread, drawing the keeper to land a three point lead in the back of the net.

Playing with speed and purpose, the goals kept coming.

James Virgili continued his outstanding pre season form to put on the play of the night – beating his man for a dash down the wing before positioning a precision cross for striker, Labinot Haliti who headed a 6 – 0 lead.

A welcome sight for Jets supporters was Nikoli Topor-Stanley returning from injury. He found his way into the action early and came close to scoring, only to be outdone by Korean, Byun Sung-Hwan with the highlight of the night – connecting long range to send a spectacular shot screaming past the Lions goal keeper into the top corner.

Last night-s result completes a successful three weeks for the Jets with Branko Culina-s squad posting 2 – 1, 3 – 0 and 9 – 0 score lines against quality NSW Premier League oppositions.

It is no wonder supporters are excited about the 2010 / 11 A-League season.
