Jets making life-saving blood donations

A group of Newcastle Jets headed to the Red Cross Blood Donation Centre at Broadmeadow on Friday to make a series of potentially life-saving blood donations.

Jason Hoffman, Glen Moss, Ben Kantarovski, Lachlan Jackson, Matt Ridenton, Matt Millar, Angus Thurgate – along with Head Coach, Ernie Merrick – were on hand to give blood throughout the day, with each donation potentially saving three lives each.

One in three Australians will need blood or blood products in their lifetime, but only 3% of Australians donate blood.

Midfielder, Ben Kantarovski said it was important for everyone to take time out of the day to donate blood.

“I was reading through some of the stats about how many people need blood versus how many people donate blood before I got here and it really shocked me, especially to learn that only 3% of Aussies actually donate,” Kantarovski said.

“As professional sportsmen, there have likely been times where we’ve been in for operations and have needed blood transfusions, so to be able to give back is important.

“It’s such a simple thing to do, it didn’t take much more than half an hour from start to finish, and to be in a position to give blood and potentially save lives is special.”

Blood Service spokesperson, Nicky Breen thanked the Jets for donating blood and encouraged fans to get involved.

“We’d like to thank the players at the Newcastle Jets for taking time out of their pre-season to roll up their sleeves and help save lives,” Breen said.

“If you’re a Jets supporter, who is eligible to donate blood, now is a great time to follow the lead of your on-field heroes and become a blood donor.

“With donated blood only lasting 42 days we need a constant supply of blood donations. It takes just an hour of your time and every donation helps save three lives.”
