Heartbreak as Jets mistakes prove costly in FFA Cup Play-off

In heartbreaking fashion, the Newcastle Jets narrowly went down to Western United in the first of the FFA Cup Play-off matches in Geelong.

Two mistakes at the back proved to be the difference as the hosts took advantage and cancelled out an incredible free-kick goal scored by Daniel Penha to move onto the Round of 32.

The Jets will now shift their focus to next Sunday’s clash with Central Coast Mariners for Round One of the new Isuzu UTE A-League Season.

Scroll below to see all the major moments of the match, in a play-by-play review.

REVIEW:

WHAT A STRIKE! Re-live Daniel Penha’s insane free-kick goal

FULL TIME: Our focus shifts to Round One as we go down in Geelong.

90+2′ Penha looks to have scored again but Young pulls off a great save

85′ Yuel comes close on a couple of occasions, but still can’t find the second needed goal.

82′ Babalj comes on for Grozos as we look to find an equaliser.

79′ WU 2-1 NEW: Prijovic scores after a mistake at the back. Western takes the lead late in the game.

76′ Western look to have scored off a corner, but the offside flag saves us again. We go down the other end, and Ingham and Penha both have shots saved. Back and forth at the moment.

74′ Penha continues to trouble the Western defence with long shots and creative dribbling. Scores still level though.

72′ We make a triple substitution. Warland on for Hoffman, Yuel for Boumal, Silvera for Siatravanis

69′ Connor Pain comes off for Western, and Pierias comes on.

64′ GOAL!!! WU 1-1 NEW: Daniel Penha fires home an incredible free-kick goal to level the score! Unbelievable stuff.

61′ Western bring on Prijovic, and Wenzel-Halls makes way

59′ Some more attacking football almost sees Penha try to slot a teammate through, but it’s blocked. The deflection lands for Grozos but his shot ends up too high.

52′ Wenzel-Halls takes on a shot just outside the box and it forces a terrific save from Duncan to keep it out.

50′ Boumal has an opportunity inside the box following some nice passing, but his shot goes too high and too wide.

46′ Wenzel-Halls puts it in the back of the net, but is luckily called offside.

45′ Second half is underway! Big effort needed all-round.

HALF-TIME: We’ve made a lot of chances, but a late goal sees us trail at the breakht

43′ WU 1-0 NEW: Western United take the lead with a Lachlan Wales goal

38′ A dangerous ball by Boumal just misses Penha’s foot as he ran into the box. We continue to knock on the door of Western’s goal

34′ A shot from distanced by Penha causes Young a bit of trouble in goal, and it’s followed up by another saved shot by Thurgate.

30′ Angus Thurgate has a cracking shot which hits Western’s goalkeeper. The deflection looked to have crossed the goal-line, but the referee waves it away.

24′ Mikeltadze seems to have gotten in behind the defence, but it’s called back for a free-kick.

20′ After 20 minutes gone, we currently have seen 62% possession and made over 150 passes. Still looking for a clear cut chance though.

13′ Western’s Lustica now receives a yellow card.

11′ Wales goes close for Western, with a close shot deflected over the bar.

10′ A great ball from Elsey sees Siatravanis get in behind the defence, but after a couple of crosses, our opportunity goes astray. Good attacking football on show though.

5′ Jordan Elsey receives an early booking.

2′ After a chance for Western, Mikeltadze takes it down the other end and delivers his first shot as a Jet! But it’s saved.
