Archie Goodwin has scored on his return from injury however it was not enough to inspire the Newcastle Jets as they fell to rivals the Central Coast Mariners in today’s F3 Derby at Industree Group Stadium.
The home side almost opened the scoring inside the first two minutes with a deflection almost finding the back of the net for the Mariners.
Both sides continued to struggle to settle into the contest for the majority of the first half with Josh Nisbet shooting from range which clipped the crossbar in the 41st minute.
The Mariners continued to push and were awarded in the 45th minute when a ball into the box from Jacob Farrell was capitalised on by Storm Roux who put his side ahead at halftime.
The Jets came close to finding an equaliser when the ball fell to Lachlan Bayliss in the box however his shot was blocked by Mariners midfielder Josh Nisbet.
The Central Coast then doubled their lead when Will Wilson found time and space on the right to hammer home his shot past Jets goalkeeper Ryan Scott.
Making his return from injury, striker Archie Goodwin was injected into the game on the 63rd-minute and found the back of the net not long after when a ball in behind the Mariners defence was pounced upon by the Novocastrian who rounded the goalkeeper to make it 2-1.
As the Jets tried to find a way back into the match they were punished in the 90th minute when Mariners substitute Jing Reec found time in the box to seal the points for the Mariners and make it 3-1.
The Jets now face Melbourne City at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle next Sunday, kick-off at 5 pm.
