With only fives days left until the Newcastle Jets take on Melbourne Heart, we are looking back to the 2010/11 season ahead of what is set to be a promising 2011/12 season.

English striker Michael Bridges led the Newcastle Jets during their 10th Foundation year.

With some strong early season performances, the Jets looked to be in great shape for a spot in the top six.

As the season progressed injuries to a number of key players quickly halted the teams charge to the finals.

Without the likes of Kasey Wehrman, Lubo Milicevic and Ruben Zadkovich the Jets struggled to find their earlier form and narrowly missed out on a spot in the finals, for only the second time since joining the A-League.

This season local talent Jobe Wheelhouse will lead the Jets out onto Ausgrid Stadium for the first time at their season opening game against Melbourne Heart on Saturday October 8.

The Jets welcome the arrival of Brazilian defender Tiago Calvano, experienced back Byun Sung-Hwan, young striker Chris Payne and the promotion of Sam Gallaway, Mario Simic and James Virgili from the Jets Youth team.

Undefeated during their pre-season, including a 1-0 win over Heart, the Jets could not of asked for a better lead up to the 2011/12 season.

Recruitment Manager David Lowe believes the Jets long and arduous pre-season will greatly benefit the Jets this season.

“Our injury toll really let the team down last season,” Lowe said.

“We are hoping all our preparation and the extensive pre-season this year will help with injury prevention and give the team every opportunity to compete in the finals.”
