David Carney

After a successful trial with Everton as a 16-year-old, Carney played alongside England superstar Wayne Rooney in the Blues Youth Team. Unfortunately, he couldn’t quite crack the first team and after several short spells at lower league clubs, he returned home to Sydney and try his luck in the Hyundai A-League with Sydney FC. After impressing at the 2007 Asian Cup finals, playing in the unfamiliar role of left wing-back, Carney attracted a lot interest overseas and he signed a deal with English Championship side Sheffield United. After a frustrating period at Bramall Lane and then at Norwich City, he moved to Dutch outfit FC Twente where he struggled for first team football. He moved back to England in 2010 to sign for Blackpool after the club won promotion to the Premier League, but was released when the club was relegated at the end of the season. However, despite his troubles at club level, Carney has always shone in a Qantas Socceroos shirt, scoring a couple of fantastic goals along the way. Carney made seven appearances for the Jets, providing three goal assists, after joining the Club towards the end of the 2013/14 Hyundai A-League season.
