ALW Match Report: Jets come from behind to rescue a point against the Glory

A spectacular strike from Mindy Barbieri has rescued a point for the Newcastle Jets as they continue their push for finals football in the Liberty A-League.

The match started with the visitors finding the back of the net when an unfortunate deflection from Zoe Karipidis resulted in the Glory taking the lead inside two minutes.

Newcastle pushed for an equaliser and Barbieri was almost rewarded when her shot in the 20th minute took a deflection which almost squeezed past Glory goalkeeper Morgan Aquino.

Sarina Bolden found space on the edge of the box to turn and shoot however her shot sailed just wide on the half-hour mark.

Just before the interval, Bolden had a chance to pull the Jets level when Barbieri’s corner was met by the Philippines international’s head, only for the ball to shave the outside of the post.

Aquino came to Perth’s rescue again when another delivery from Barbieri was met by a Bolden header yet the Glory custodian somehow kept her side in front.

Perth had a rare chance when they pilled numbers on the counter-attack, only for Natasha Prior to make a crucial last-ditch effort to block Glory’s shot in the 72nd minute.

The Jets were rewarded for their pressure when a perfectly timed volley from Barbieri rocketed past a helpless Aquino.

Ryan Campbell’s side almost stole the points at the death when substitute Josie Allan found time and space inside the box, only for her shot to be tipped onto the crossbar and away for a corner by Aquino as the visitors held on for a draw.

The Jets now travel away to face Melbourne City next Sunday as they continue their quest for a finals appearance.
