ALM Match Report: Vidic makes debut in Jets loss

The Newcastle Jets have suffered a 2-0 loss against Melbourne City at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The match saw an A-League debut to 19-year old striker Justin Vidic who started the match in the absence of Apostolos Stamatelopoulos who was ruled out with a hamstring injury.

The Jets fell behind in the 12th minute when a cross from Marin Jakoliš was met at the back post by Benjamin Mazzeo to put the visitors 1-0 ahead.

Newcastle pushed for an equaliser and started to control much of the football and almost drew level in the 32nd minute when Trent Buhagiar hit the crossbar from just outside the 18-yard box.

Midfielder Clayton Taylor tested City’s resolve only a couple of minutes later when his shot flashed just wide of Jamie Young’s post.

The visitors doubled their lead on the 57th-minute mark when a counter-attack resulted in Socceroos striker Jamie Maclaren finding time and space inside the box to cooly tuck his shot away.

The goal didn’t deter the Jets and they found some momentum with the injection of Reno Piscopo and Archie Goodwin from the bench.

The match was plunged into controversy when Archie Goodwin was played in behid the City defence only to be taken out by goalkeeper Jamie Young in the 77th minute.

The referee awarded a yellow card and after a VAR check, the decision was upheld.

Aurelio Vidmar’s side held on for a 2-0 win. The Jets now face an away trip to league leaders the Wellington Phoenix next Saturday, 9th December.
