Newcastle Jets Academy player Alex Nunes has been selected for the upcoming five-day Australia Under-17s training camp in Canberra.
Thirty-four (34) ambitious Australian footballers will assemble in the nation’s capital today as the next generation of the Joeys – Australia’s U-17 men’s national football team – commence or continue their national team journeys.
The young footballers will spend the next five days training at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) under National Teams staff, including Trevor Morgan and Tony Vidmar, with each player aiming to put his best foot forward ahead of Australia’s participation at the upcoming AFF U-16 Youth Championship in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Next week a final 23-player squad will be selected to represent the green and gold next month in Indonesia, with the Joeys set to participate in Group C of the competition alongside Cambodia, Malaysia, and Myanmar.
Australia’s AFF U-16 Youth Championship campaign will kick-off against Myanmar at on Tuesday, 2 August at the Madya Senayan Stadium, which sits in the shadows of Jakarta’s iconic Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.
The team will return to the same venue three days later to challenge Cambodia, before rounding out their Group Phase campaign with a meeting with Malaysia at the Patriot Candrabhaga Stadium in Bekasi on Monday, 8 August.
Each of Australia’s Group C fixtures at the AFF U-16 Youth Championship will kick-off at 3pm local time (6pm AEST).
Australia will need to finish first in Group C, or as the best overall runner-up in the three pools, to advance to the semi-finals of the competition. The knockout phase of the tournament will be played exclusively at the 30,000 seat Patriot Candrabhaga Stadium.
Australia has won the AFF U-16 Youth Championship twice in the past, claiming the crown in 2008 and 2016. The green and gold also finished second in 2012, and third in 2013, 2015, and 2017.
The 34 players aiming to impress this week at the AIS are listed below.
