ALW Match Report: Jets rue chances in Bathurst defeat

The Newcastle Jets have fallen to the Western Sydney Wanderers 2-1 in front of a healthy crowd at Carrington Park in Bathurst on Friday night.

The Jets started the match with attacking intent and were unlucky to not take the lead when a beautiful pass from Sophie Hoban found Libby Copus-Brown who saw her shot sail just wide.

Ryan Campbell’s side did find the opener only minutes later when some great link up play between Sarina Bolden and Copus-Brown resulted in the latter firing her shot into the back of the net.

The Jets continued to push the Wanderers for another goal and were dealt a blow on the stroke of halftime when striker Sophie Harding found space in behind Newcastle’s defensive line to squeeze her shot past goalkeeper Isabel Nino.

Copus-Brown continued to cover plenty of ground in the Jets midfield and was unlucky to not grab her second of the match when a mix-up at the back allowed the Jets midfielder to test Wanderers goalkeeper Kaylie Collins however the shot-stopper recovered in time to claim the shot comfortably.

Newcastle continued to press for a winning goal and winger Lauren Allan was unlucky to not score after Collins was forced to tip her spectacular effort over the crossbar.

Star striker Sarina Bolden was the next player to force a brilliant save out of Collins when her curling effort was kept out in the 75th minute.

The Jets were made to pay in the 78th minute when a free-kick from Amy Harrison was palmed away by Nino, only for the ball to land at Vicky Bruce’s feet as the American tucked her shot past her compatriot and give the Wanderers a 2-1 win.

Ryan Campbell’s side next find themselves in action on Saturday afternoon when they take on Brisbane Roar at Maitland Sportsground.
