The Newcastle Jets have defeated the Central Coast Mariners 1-0 in Budgewoi today. Coincidentally, it is one year to the day that the Hunter based club defeated their southern rivals by the same scoreline in the 2008 Hyundai A-League Grand Final.

The first half was a somewhat cagey affair, with perhaps the only clear-cut opportunity falling to dynamic right-back Tarek Elrich early on, who burst onto an Adam D-Apuzzo through ball, only to see his shot crash into the post.
In the 50th minute, striker Sean Rooney broke free from the Mariners- defence, cut inside onto his left foot and hit a stinging low drive which was superbly held by custodian Andrew Redmayne.
Eight minutes later and Elrich again hit the bar, this time from a well taken free-kick from 20 yards out which had the beating of a hapless Redmayne.
It would only be a few moments later when the Jets would make the breakthrough, and it would be ex-Mariners marksman and Jets newcomer Sasho Petrovski who would do the damage. An early release by Ben Kennedy in the Jets- goal saw Petrovski one-on-one with his marker, the big striker held off his man before calmly slotting home with his left foot to give the visitors a well deserved lead.
The game was the Jets- second win, and clean sheet, within the space of four days, after the team defeated Northern NSW State Football League side Edgeworth 2-0 on Saturday morning.
