The Newcastle Jets remain without a win in Season 2 of the Westfield W-League after being defeated 1-0 by Sydney FC today in Sydney.
In humid conditions Sydney dominated the first half with Sydney FC-s Leena Khamis once again causing nightmares for the Jet’s, scoring spectacularly in the 24th minute. When the Jet’s last met Sydney FC at EnergyAustralia Stadium it was Khamis who was a major thorn in the side of the Jet’s defence and today she proved again her value to the Sky Blues.
If Newcastle were to take anything from the match, it was that they held Khamis and Sydney to just the one goal, not an easy feat after a second half played with only 10 players following Captain Hayley Crawford received a second yellow card just prior to halftime and watching the remainder of the match from the sideline.
In the second half, as they have continued to do all season, Newcastle lifted in the face of adversity being a goal down and a player short. The Jets managed to gain possession more frequently, but Sydney continued their offensive, but lacked finishing touch.
In the 56th minute Sydney received a free kick straight in front on the edge of the area but Julie Rydal-s shot was carried away by Jets keeper Alison Logue.
Newcastle had a chance to steal a point in the dying stages with a corner but was left empty handed.
Jets Coach Wayne O-Sullivan praised his side-s efforts despite the loss.
“Under the circumstances the girls did themselves proud. The signs are good; we have good people who are willing to work hard.”
The Jet’s return home next weekend to play at EnergyAustralia Stadium in a double header with their A-League counterparts.
