The Newcastle Jets will play their final match of Season 2 of the Westfield W-League this weekend in front of a warm home crowd at Wanderers Oval.
Still attempting to claim their first victory of the season, the Jets are preparing to face last year-s Grand Final Winners, Brisbane Roar, who are currently sitting in 3rd place.
Assistant Coach Andre Gumprecht is looking forward to the match ahead and believes that Brisbane Roar are the perfect opposition for his squad to record their first three points against.
“We have one more game and there is no better opponent out there to get your first win and this is obviously what we are aiming for and what we believe we can achieve.”
“All our focus at this week-s training is on the opponent and walking off the field with three points and this would leave us in very positive spirits,” said Gumprecht.
While attention has already turned to preparations for next season, Gumprecht is sure that once the side has been together and had the opportunity to train together for a number of months, they are sure to succeed.
Admitting that the side has had many interruptions throughout the season, ranging from representative duty to the HSC, Gumprecht maintains that he and Head Coach Wayne O-Sullivan will not discount a player due to their responsibilities.
“The worst thing you can do is not pick players because of their commitments; we pick players because of their talent,” he said.
The Jets face a tough challenge of defeating Brisbane Roar this weekend to ensure they avoid the wooden spoon but are hoping that a vocal home crowd will help to lift the squad.
The Jets kickoff against Brisbane Roar on Saturday 5th December at 4:00pm at Wanderers Oval, Broadmeadow. Tickets can be purchased from the gate.
