The home side took the lead twice during the match but were pegged back on each occasion by a determined Gold Coast outfit.
Striker Mirjan Pavlovic opened the scoring for the Jets in the 14th minute when he hit a powerful cross-cum-shot from a tight angle on the right that hit the crossbar and deflected in off goalkeeper Tim Anderson.
There was to be more misfortune for Anderson just prior to the half-time whistle when he was ruled to have handled a Brodie Mooy strike whilst outside of his penalty area. The send-off required Scott Higgins to take the field, with electrifying winger Golgol Mehbratu making way.
Three minutes into the second stanza, and Hyundai A-League fullback Adama Traore pushed forward down the left flank and cut inside to hit a stinging low drive into the bottom corner to level matters.
Midway through the half and Mooy would once again give Newcastle the advantage though. A superb through ball was played by Umut Tokdogan to substitute Adrian Karakolevski, who squared the ball for Mooy who scored with a 20-yard strike.
The visitors looked to have levelled the game again on 78 minutes, but Brazilian import Milson made a spectacular miss from 5-yards out with the goalmouth empty.
Heartache was to ensue with only five minutes of time remaining though when Benjamin Wearing latched onto a free-kick from just inside the Jets half, and the youngster scrambled home the late equaliser to give United a share of the spoils.
