QR National has announced the winner of its 2012 Volunteer of the Year in the Junior Football category.
Belinda Gibbons, from the Thornton Junior Football Club, was honored at a special function at Hunter Stadium on Saturday night, prior to the Newcastle Jets match against the Central Coast Mariners.
Belinda was nominated by Club President, Anthony Bishop, who described her as a wonderful organizer of the Club-s 32 teams and a fantastic fundraiser, who had brought thousands of dollars into the Club.
Belinda has been a Club volunteer for over seven years, five of which have been spent as Club Secretary.
“Secretary of the Year, that-s what we call Belinda. She-s the best!” said Mr Bishop.
The QR National Volunteer of the Year program was launched in March this year, in partnership with the Newcastle Jets and the Newcastle Knights.
It program recognises the invaluable contribution volunteers make to junior rugby league and football clubs throughout the Newcastle and Hunter Valley region and is part of QR National-s commitment to give back to the communities in which it operates and where its employees live.
The winner of the Rugby League Volunteer of the Year Shirley Rostron, from Swansea Caves Junior Rugby League Club, received her award at the Knights’ Awards Night recently in Newcastle.
Like her rugby league volunteer counterpart, in addition to the cash prize and certificate received by each program nominee, Belinda was presented with the QR National Volunteer of the Year (Football) trophy and a $1,000 cheque for her club.
All eight finalists in the football category attended Saturday night-s QR National Volunteer of the Year event. Each were chosen for their outstanding contribution to junior sport in the Hunter.
QR National acknowledges all program nominees for their service to junior football in the Hunter and congratulates Belinda Gibbons on her award.
The Volunteer Program will again be held in 2013.
