Greg McDermott, the son of former Liverpool FC and England legend Terry McDermott, is currently training with the Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets.

A product of the youth system of English Premier League club Newcastle United, the 21-year-old has made his way to Newcastle, NSW through his friendship with fellow Geordie and Jets striker Michael Bridges.

“I was at Newcastle United since I was nine, so I was there for about 10 or 11 years before I left during the summer,” McDermott said.

“I have some connections through Bridgey who used to play alongside my brother.

“I-m just here training for a while to keep myself fit and to see how I like it.”

McDermott-s father Terry played 232 times for Liverpool FC and represented England on 25 occasions.

The younger McDermott is a central midfielder and said he was enjoying the experience of being able to spend some time training in Australia.

“It-s been a bit strange coming to Newcastle here in Australia. Some of the places have the same names as Newcastle back home, which is interesting,” he said.

“It-s boiling here compared to England where it-s raining and freezing cold, so it-s much nicer here at the moment.”

The Newcastle Jets currently have a full quota of visa players.
